Political organization of the Middle East:
For many years the Middle East was under control by the Ottoman Empire. However, things changed in 1798, when European countries began to come between Middle East politics. The Ottoman Empire was given to Britain and France to be part of the League of Nations. This was when Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia gained independence from Britain and France in the 1920's and 1930's. The remainder part of the countries gained independence from 1944 until 1971. After that, monarchs and dictators ruled the governments. The Middle East had to major challenges which included economic development and the establishment of political stability. The Middle East’s political instability is due to the wars, revolutions, and civil wars. Also, the importance placed on the Middle East by foreign powers contributed to the political instability. Citizens are moving toward democracy because of greater participation in politics of the country.

Types of governments in the Middle East:

The country Saudi Arabia and Oman have a Monarchy type of government. A monarchy government is a supreme power or sovereignty held by one person. The King of Saudi Arabia is Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud.

The countries Jordan, Morocco, and Bahrain have a Constitutional Monarchy type of government. A constitutional government is a monarchy in which the powers of the ruler are restricted to those granted under the constitution and laws of the nation.

The country Iran, has a Theocratic Republic type of government. A Theocratic Republic is a government headed by a religious leader but is not set on the people but is an elected representative of the country. The leader of this type of government usually takes the country towards religious beliefs which is why this type of government is not moving forward.

The country Iraq, Palestine, and Israel have a Parliamentary Democracy type of government. A Parliamentary Democracy is a system of Representative government when the dominant party in the legislature chooses the Prime Minister.

The country Algeria, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen, and Egypt have a Republic type of government. In this government people elect officials. Although, a Republic and a Democracy government are about the same they do have some differences. A Republic government is headed by a president.

The country Kuwait and Qatar have a Constitutional Emirate type of government. In this government the emirate refers to a hereditary title who is able to appoint and dismiss the prime minister. Kuwait’s prime minister is Nasir Muhammad and is appointed by the emirate Amir Sabah al-Ahmad.

The country Libya has a Jamahiriya type of government. A Jarmahiriya government is "a state of the masses."

The country Sudan has a Coalition type of government. A Coalition government is when many political parties must work together to run the country.

The country Turkey has a Republican Parliamentary Democracy type of government. A republican parliamentary democracy is when the legislature chooses the government, the elected representatives elect the legislation.

The country United Arab Emirates has a Federation of emirates type of government. A federation of emirates has a prime minister also with the federal president. Also, each emirate has a separate ruler who overlooks the local government. The seven emirates are Trucial States—Abu Dhabi (the largest), Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, and Umm al-Qaiwain.
